Foundations Built to Last

Mahindra® wouldn’t be where it is without its founders, and you’ll need to know a bit about them to understand the company’s success. J.C Mahindra was India’s first Steel Controller at the outset of World War II, when the steel trade was critical. His brother, K.C. Mahindra, was another industrialist. He was the chairman of the Indian Coal Fields Committee of the Government of India and of the Automobile and Tractor Panel.

The third and final founder was Malik Ghulam Muhammad, and he worked as a financier for the government. At the end of their public duties, these three noteworthy persons decided to start their own company. Initially it was named Mahindra & Muhammad, though when Muhammad left the company, it changed to Mahindra & Mahindra.

Growing the Company

The company was initially founded in 1945 as a jeep construction and steel production company, dedicated to assisting the war effort. They continued these aspects of their company until 1961, when they joined with International Harvester to build their first tractor. That tractor, as you might have guessed, went on to become one of the most popular agricultural products in the United States.
